In addition to their new album Boxing the Moonlight, Mister heavenly has just released video for their single “Makin’ Excuses.” The song is the the third single they released as well as the third track on the physical album. The album marks the indie trio’s refreshing return since their last album Out of Love which was released back in 2011.
During that six year gap, the three band members have been working on solo ventures and projects with their other bands. Ryan Kattner, otherwise known as Honus Honus, has released solo album called Use Your Delusion, and continued to work with his band Man Man. Nicholas Thornburn, others known as Nick Diamonds, also released a solo album called City of Quartz as well as Who Will Cut Our Hair When We’re Gone with his band The Unicorns and four other albums with his band Islands. Joe Plummer, their drummer, has been busy touring and recording Strangers to Ourselves with Modest Mouse, releasing Heartworms with The Shins and releasing music with Cold War Kids, who he recently joined.
The supergroup has managed to find time in their busy schedule to come together and record a stellar album of eleven dynamic songs. Unlike their first album which was head-centered, emotional and melodic, this album is much more body-centered, detached, and rhythmic. It is a gritty account that continues to draw from the doo-wop inspired sounds of their first album, but also adds new elements such as 60s surf rock, 70s grunge, 80s new wave rock and 90s pop. Kattner chalks the diversity of the album up to the desire to mirror humans: “I personally hate albums where every song sounds the same…People are complicated. People have a lot of different vibes running through them at any given moment.”
“Makin’ Excuses,” combines a hip hop drums rhythms with surf-pop bass line and guitar riffs to create a paradoxically relaxing and frenetic song. The video is full of tongue in cheek moments (and not so tongue in cheek moments, see 2:50 ) that mirror the fun vibes in the song. According to Stereogum, the video was directed by band member Thorburn, with the help of Jason Tippet. The video follows a very modern and unusual date between two drone users (Tony Revolori and Dre Babinski) and their robotic drones (played by Jon Daly and Angela Trimbur).
