Thom Yorke just announced three added dates to his 2017 winter tour. Two headline shows will be played with Nigel Godrich and Tarik Barri, a visual artist. The shows come right around the Day for Night Festival that Yorke will attend in Houston on December 15th. Tickets go on sale Friday, October 6th, at ten a.m. Pacific Standard Time.
Yorke has other news. Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes, Yorke’s 2014 solo album, is out for reissue via XL Recordings on the 8th of December. The album will be available at all CD and record stores and will be released on vinyl and on streaming services.
Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes is Yorke’s second solo album. Godrich, who will perform with Yorke at the added dates, produced the album, as he does for most of Radiohead’s albums. The album takes Yorke’s vocals and applies them to his piano playing, using electronic sounds and beats as the container in which the two find themselves in a kind of swirling dance. Yorke released the album via BitTorrent bundle, creating the most ever downloaded legal torrent of 2014. Fans downloaded the album over one million times in its first six days; by February 2015 it had been downloaded 4.5 millions times.
Yorke decided to release the album directly to fans on the internet because of the success Radiohead experienced doing so with In Rainbows. The idea is to give more autonomy to artists, in turn taking away some from labels. To the consumer its all the same, a download is a download. It is interesting to see that the reissue of Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes will be released on a label, seeing that Yorke had made such waves in the music industry when he cut out the middle man. Labels help artists market and brand their content. It is understandable that bands need help with the business end of the music industry, although sometimes the relationship can be straining. Yorke and Godrich attempted to take this issue out onto the floor with their releases. Yorke’s new tour dates are listed below:
December 12th – The Fonda Theater – Los Angeles, CA
December 14th – Fox Theater – Oakland, CA
December 17th – Day For Night Festival – Houston, TX
