Thom Yorke is set to perform two US headline shows in a live mix with Nigel Godrich and visual artist Tarik Barri. One of the nights happens to be in Los Angeles at the Fonda, Dec. 12. This is in addition to his previously announced special appearance at Day for Night Festival in Houston, Texas. Going on tour in support of his 2014 album Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes being re-issued on XL Recordings Dec. 8, Thom Yorke will be playing tracks from across all of his solo material. Tickets will go on general sale this Friday, Oct. 6 and are probably going to go really fast. Be ready to cop those the second they come out at 10 am.
While mostly known as being at the forefront of alternative band Radiohead, Yorke has also made a name for himself as a solo artist. Born Thomas Edward Yorke, the English musician grew up in Oxfordshire. His band Radiohead first signed to Parlophone Records after he graduated from college. Their hit “Creep” subsequently shoved the band into super stardom; the band has been selling millions of albums since the 90s. Radiohead has released something like 9 albums since their inception and have 30 singles.
But Yorke’s first solo debut didn’t come out until 2006 with The Eraser, through XL Recordings. This album came years after the big Radiohead change from guitars to electronics. That change didn’t do much to jostle any old or new fans though. The album, which went certified gold twice, broke onto multiple charts across the world, peaking at number 2 in the US, Canada and Australia.
The same year Yorke put out an EP titled Splitting Feathers, via Warner Bros. Produced by Nigel Goodrich, it was a b-side that was only released in Japan. Two years later, a compilation album was released titled The Eraser Rmxs. The album peaked at number 13 on the US Electronic Charts. While doing all of this, Radiohead had just released In Rainbows (2007) and Radiohead: The Best Of (2008). After years of waiting and more Radiohead releases, Yorke finally released his second solo album, Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes (2014). Produced once again by Nigel Goodrich, the album first came out through BitTorrent, then was released on vinyl online. Japan’s Hostess Entertainment also released it on CD.
Rolling Stone said that the album “demands deep listening, as Yorke’s melancholic voice echoes through the hall of synth-mirrors he’s built with producer Nigel Godrich.” Pitchfork said that “Yorke’s vocals blend seamlessly with glitchy textures and stuttering beats.”
