Diet Cig released a bewitching music video for “Maid of the Mist” from their album Swear I’m Good At This.” The scenes in the video may trigger some nostalgia from old high school days as kids sit in a circle playing the classic game spin-the-bottle. The underlying message of the song and video is female empowerment, and what better way to portray that then with a group of witches.
Lead singer and guitarist Alex Luciano trills “And I am bigger than the outside shell of my body and if you touch it without asking then you’ll be sorry,” as she sits in a satanic circle drinking from a chalice placed in the center of a pentagram with her witchy women. Powerful lyrics to a equally powerful setting, all directed by Emily Dubin. According to DIY, on her vision of the video, Emily Dubin stated, “My goal with the Maid of the Mist video was to take the stereotype of the ’emotional girl’ and lean into it as hard as possible. Often times, women who exhibit any sort of emotional reaction to anything are labelled over-sensitive and are told to essentially ‘get over it.’
We rarely are given control, and when we do exercise control, we’re labelled as domineering or a bitch. The idea that a group of witches set up this whole ritual and do this extravagant spell just so they can make sure to kiss the boy they want during spin the bottle is meant to be a melodramatic reflection of the way men perceive women: always extra, always emotional, always plotting.”
Diet Cig are currently on a European tour with The Spook School and recently announced new U.S. dates, continuing the promotion of their album Swear I’m Good At This. Watch the video for “Maid of the Mist” below.
