Beastie Boys have lifted their strict no-ad policy for the use of “Sabotage” in the promo for the first person shooter game Destiny 2. According to Stereogum, when Adam Yauch died in 2012, his will prohibited the use of any music, that he made, for advertisement purposes.
As reported by Rolling Stone, the will reads “Notwithstanding anything to the contrary, in no event may my image or name or any music or any artistic property created by me be used for advertising purposes.” Since this policy was put in place, the band has gone to court with Monster Energy Drink for having one of their songs playing at a sponsored snowboard competition without their permission. The band fought with GoldieBlox, a toy company, for copyright infringement on making a parody for “Girls” in a commercial. The band had also refused permission to use “Sabotage” to Arnold Schwarzenegger because there was a thought that it felt like a big endorsement.
The band had allowed the use of “Sabotage” to the 2009 Star Trek and 2016 Star Trek Beyond trailer. According to Adweek, Mike D and Ad-Rock “watched the two-minute mix of cinematic action and winking humor and gave their blessing.”
