As if Houston hasn’t been through enough in the last couple weeks, now one of their most exciting music festivals has been canceled. Originally scheduled for October 14th and 15th, this would have been Houston Open Air Festival’s second year. Unfortunately, the cancellation announcement came from the festival’s Facebook page this morning. The message was to-the-point and something that many had been expecting. “Due to unforeseen and ongoing circumstances as well as continuous relief efforts needed to help stabilize Houston and its surrounding areas, we are cancelling Houston Open Air.”
The Houston Open Air Festival features primarily hard rock and metal acts, this year the lineup was jam-packed with artists like Five Finger Death Punch, Prophets of Rage, Marilyn Manson, Mastodon, and more. This isn’t even the first time that weather has presented serious problems for the festival. In it’s inaugural year, severe storms and lightning presented safety concerns and caused massive cancellations. CEO Danny Haydes statement from 2016 is eerily just as relevant today. “We spent hundreds of hours planning every aspect of Houston Open Air, but you can’t plan the weather, you can only have a plan to respond to it.”
Another statement made last year was that the festival would be coming back “bigger and badder.” It’s uncertain if the festival will go forward next year, for the Houston Open Air team, hopefully the third time will be the charm. For now, all we can do is donate to the Hurricane Harvey relief fund and wish for the best.
