Fans were treated to an extra special performance from Fiona Apple at this year’s Ohana Festival. The critically acclaimed songwriter performed for the first time in 2017 and unveiled an unreleased song during the set, according to Pitchfork. The song, possibly titled “Tipple” was played couple of years ago, but this new version features a new full band arrangement. Also, Apple performed a couple of inspired cover songs such as the Brains’ “Money Changes Everything,” Conway Twitty’s “It’s Only Make Believe,” and Frank Sinatra’s “I’ll Be Around.” The crowd reacted positively to each of these covers as they soaked up every bit of the performance, serenading the singer with “Happy Birthday” during the closing portion of the set.
There is still no news from Apple regarding a new album, as the singer-songwriter has not released a new record since 2012’s The Idler Wheel…. Musically speaking “Tipple” features many of the same sonic qualities that have won Apple much critical acclaim during her twenty-year music career, namely strong vocal lines blended with snappy jazz and disorienting rock.
However, Apple has still been releasing new music in recent years, collaborating with Andrew Bird on the song “Left Handed Kisses” and writing the opening theme song to the Showtime show The Affair. Apple, an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump, has also released a string of protest songs including last year’s “Trump’s Nuts Roasting on an Open Fire” at the Standing Rock benefit concert. This year Apple released another protest song before the Women’s March on Washington, another scathing Trump critique called “Tiny Hands.”
The Ohana Festival, curated by Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder, was another massive success in its second year of existence. Thousands of music fans flocked to Doheny State Beach in Dana Point, California for the three-day festival which featured the likes of The Pixies, Eddie Vedder, Social Distortion, Haim, and Jack Johnson. The festival produced some impressive collaborations between Vedder and many of the other headlining bands, with Apple joining Vedder during his headlining set on the second day of the festival to perform the Neil Young classic “Rockin’ in the Free World.”
