LCD Soundsystem Score First Number One Album with New Album American Dream

American Dream is LCD Soundsystem’s latest and only record to reach number one on Billboard’s 200. Selling 85,000 copies during its first week, fans bought 81,000 traditionally as complete packages. A number of the sales included in that tally are from a bundle the band offered concertgoers, in which they received a free copy with their tickets. This comes after their last album, This Is Happening, made it as far as number ten in 2010. American Dream had no trouble sliding in front of Lil Uzi Vert’s Luv Is Rage 2 and XXXtentacion’s 17, which slipped to numbers two and three respectively.

In April of 2011, after an angry conversation with the promoters of LCD Soundsystem’s Madison Square Garden show, James Murphy announced the band would split up. A short time after, Murphy, in an interview with The New York Times, hinted that the announcement may have been more of a stunt to boost ticket sales than a reasonable idea. However, the split went through; five years later the band announced plans to reunite. A day after that, they announced plans to record American Dream. A little over a year later, their album holds the number one spot.

LCD Soundsystem is a band that’s always been good, even if they’ve improved over time. Longtime fans will express a nostalgic penchant for their first, self-titled album, but admit it shouldn’t be the first thing a person hears from the band. Their music blends really nicely the electronic and rock formats, creating sounds, harmonies and backgrounds that sound more like complete compositions than a collection of instruments making sound. People call James Murphy a genius for his ear and his wit. Many agree, but their sound isn’t for everyone. The position of American Dream at number one seems to signal a shift in LCD Soundsystem’s appeal. Below, find the band’s upcoming tour dates.

Conrad Brittenham: My name is Conrad. I am one year out of college and pursuing a career in writing and journalism. I studied literature at Bard College, in the Hudson Valley. My thesis focuses on the literal and figurative uses of disease in Herman Melville’s most famous works, including Moby-Dick, Benito Cereno, and Billy Budd. My literary research on the topic of disease carried over to more historical findings about how humans tend to deal with and think about the problem of virus and infectivity. I’ve worked at a newspaper and an ad agency, as well as for the past year at an after school program, called The Brooklyn Robot Foundry. All of these positions have influenced the way I approach my work, my writing, and the way I interact with others in a professional setting. I’ve lived in London and New York, and have always had a unique perspective on international cultural matters. I am an avid drawer and a guitarist, but I would like to eventually work for a major news publication as an investigative journalist.
