Joseph Arthur is taking up a month-long residency at Hotel Cafe in Los Angeles starting this Wednesday, Sept. 13. Currently working on new material for a new album in 2018, he might plan to test songs out live. On top of that he will be playing old hits and rarities during his residency, according to his website. Readers will only find out if they see it for themselves. Arthur performs Sept. 13, 20 and 27.
From Akron, Ohio, Joseph Arthur is an singer-songwriter and artist widely known for his solo work. But he is also known for being a member of Fistful of Mercy and RNDM. Arthur is a little indie, a little folky, and always busy as an artist. Over the years, Arthur kept going on tour and churning out album after album. His discography spans over decades and it has gained a lot of recognition through that. His performances are raw and eclectic, NPR calling him versatile and prolific rocker. The artist is also known for producing the cover art on all of his albums, NPR noting it when he first began self-releasing his albums.
His music has been described as simple melodies with soaring vocal harmonies, each song holding its own driving force, NPR wrote in 2006. Arthur was also nominated for a Grammy in 1999 for the album cover artwork on his EP Vacancy, showing how multifaceted he is. Long story short, Arthur is a sad guy writing sad songs. If you’re a fan of acoustics and the sheer stony gravel in someone’s voice, you’ve come to read the right article.
Arthur released his debut album Big City Secrets in 1997 on Real World Records, a UK record label co-owned by Peter Gabriel and WOMAD. His second album, Come to Where I’m From (2000), was also released on Real World. He released Shadows Will Remain in 2004. After that he established his own record label, Lonely Astronaut Records, in 2006. He subsequently released two studio albums after, Let’s Just Be (2007) and Temporary People (2008), with the Lonely Astronauts. Arthur released The Graduation Ceremony in 2011 and a double album, Redemption City, in 2012.
In 2013 his tenth album, The Ballad of Boogie Christ, was released. In 2014 he put out an album of Lou Reed covers. The next year Days of Surrender followed, and The Family followed after. He also has an extensive list of EPs dating back to 1996. The majority of his work, including albums, compilations, singles and EPs, has been critically acclaimed, according to AllMusic.
