After months of dropping hints and playing shows, St. Vincent has finally announced her new album. Masseduction is her first new work in three years. The hype cycle officially started back in June, when St. Vincent announced an expansive tour via video press release. Then, at her first show in Tokyo, she debuted Masseduction’s first single, “New York.” Now, we just have to wait till October 13th to hear the whole thing,
While this news came via a traditional email press release, it’s style was anything but. Unashamed braggadocio and superlative snippets of past reviews are press release standard, but St. Vincent opted to stay casual: “hi all, it’s been a while … putting out a record is like having a bridezilla-style wedding every 2-3 years.” She goes on to speak about the stress of the undertaking, how those around you make it harder, but in the end it’s all about love. Though, not without disclosing the shortcomings of the analogy: “for the sake of the emotional momentum of this note, we are choosing to ignore that centuries of marriage were not, in fact, about love but about wealth consolidation/women as chattel.” It’s an incredibly simple and endearing message for what St. Vincent has referred to as her “deepest, boldest” work.
Alongside the announcement came the single, “Los Angeles,” which sonically is very different from the other single, “New York.” Pre orders are now available on St. Vincent’s site, and her tour is still in full swing. There’s 25 dates left – everywhere from Detroit to Dublin, tickets here.
