The man behind the iconic band Can, Holger Czukayband, has died accoring to the Cologne newspaper Kölner Stadt-Anzeigerreports. Czukayband was apparently found dead in the original Can studio in Weilerswist, Germany just near Cologne. He reportedly had been living their. Right now, the cause of his death has not yet been confirmed.
Unfortunately, the passing of Czukayband is the second loss for Can this year; founding drummer Jaki Liebezeit died in January. Holger Czukay was a one of a kind investor who helped pioneer the art of sampling. Besides working with the band Can, he put out a few solo albums, including his most recent, Eleven Years Innerspace in 2015. You might recognize on their more popular songs called “Spoon”.
The band Can got going all the way back in 1968. In addition to actually being in the band by playing bass, Czukay also engineered and recorded most of their albums. Like a lot of band or group members, Czukay left the band to pursue a solo career. He released his debut LP Movie! in 1978, and a few albums after that. Holger Czukayband was 79.
Can are due to release an autobiography, All Gates Open, in 2018.
