By most accounts St. Vincent balled out in 2014. She released her stellar St. Vincent LP and subsequently garnered tons of critical praise for her catchy yet off-kilter brand of pop music. After topping mxdwn’s “Top 40 Albums of 2014,” St. Vincent has been slowly toiling away on her new project.
After releasing the audio for her melancholy new track “New York,” St. Vincent is back with some accompanying visuals, and despite the rather solemn music, the visuals are anything but. The entire video is drenched in neon and pastel, full of bright and loud colors. Directed by Alex Da Corte, St. Vincent breaks out the high-fashion. Lounging with swan, shopping in her faded pink underwear, hitting a boujee nail salon and stabbing roses, Vincent provides plenty of contrast in her new video as she laments on New York not being the same without her lover.
In an interview with Pitchfork, Da Corte spoke on the connection between the brightly colored visuals and the subject matter, New York, saying “I live in Philadelphia, and I think a lot of people have different ideas of what New York is, and there is no one right idea or true idea.”
Da Corte also said that “Annie’s” (St. Vincent), version of New York is “the Toontown” to his Hollywood. “I think Annie’s New York is the New York of my dreams—one that is blurry and fractured, dreamy and flat…It is beautiful but slightly out of reach.”
