It’s been nearly a year since the world lost Leonard Cohen (along with a slew of other famous musicians in 2016), and for most fans it still doesn’t quite feel real. In honor of his death, Sincerely, L Cohen: A Live Celebration of Leonard Cohen will be released September 21 (what would have been his 83rd birthday) through the Royal Potato Family.
Cohen passed away in early November of last year, just one day before the 2016 election. Toward the end of January, New York City paid tribute to the legendary singer-songwriter with a concert at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. Richard Thompson, Josh Ritter, Will Sheff (Okkervil River), Amy Helm, Lee Ranaldo, Elvis Perkins, Holly Miranda and a dozen others were all in attendance to pay tribute to the legend through music and poetry.
Sincerely, L Cohen will consist of highlight performances from the almost three-hour concert. Both were produced by Cohen fans Jesse Lauter (Tedeschi Trucks Band), Hanna Gold (City Winery Presents,) and Josh Kaufman. Kaufman was also in charge of leading the house band which consisted of Ray Rizzo (Drums- Yo Yo Ma), Walt Martin (Keys- The Walkmen), Annie Nero (Bass- Craig Finn), Stuart Bogie (Brass & Woodwinds- Arcade Fire), Nick Kinsey (Percussions- Kevin Morby), and Dave Harrington (Guitar- Darkside), as well as backing vocals from Jocie Adams, Cassandra Jenkins and Leslie Mendelson.
The first song from the LP is a bluesy cover of “Hallelujah” by Delicate Steve, which you can stream below. The album will be made digital on September 21, and 500 vinyl copies are available for preorder and will hit stores just before the holidays. All proceeds will go to the Preemptive Love Coalition, a non-profit that helps children and families affected by terrorism around the world.
