A few months ago, the British rock band, Ride released their album, Weather Diaries. The album, which is the first new album in the last two decades marked the band’s return. Today, the band revealed a new video for their single, “Cali.” A song that should go on everyone’s summer playlist.
The track follows the band’s previous released singles “All I Want,” “Charm Assault,” and “Home is a Feeling,” all from their critically acclaimed album Weather Diaries which was released back in June via Wichita Recordings.
In the new music video for “Cali” the band depicts the sunshine and surf that is associated with the title state. It showcases the beauty of California all through the perspective of two surfers. The video looks and resembles a beach movie and the song is the perfect tune for a summer soundtrack. “Cali” also features colorful filters throughout the video giving it a psychedelic tone.
According to Andy Bell, the video for “Cali” is a “love song which features imagery of California and the ocean, so a video which features a surfing couple was the perfect fit. What I love about the video is that it avoids some of the retro surf film clichés and stays with a contemporary kind of look. The psychedelic nature of the editing is more in line with the Vaporwave aesthetic than 60’s psychedelia. What Niall Trask has come up with got an immediate thumbs up from the entire band and is my favourite Ride video to date.”
The video’s director Niall Trask explains, “The video orbits around a bond and passing of time shared by two surfers, Harry and Melodie. I wanted to encapsulate the essence of the song’s story by showing the tender moments of love and connection both in and out of the waves. Much of Ride’s art direction in the past has been wave and surf themed, and for this song in particular it felt right to revisit this theme with a fresh approach.”
