The groundbreaking band in popular music, Gorillaz, announced they will be including San Francisco as part of their 2017 comeback tour. After having performed at the arts and music festival, Outside Lands, in San Francisco, the band will be performing at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium this October 4th.
Gorillaz was created in 1998 by members Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett. The band’s image, character, and identity were inspired by cartoon MTV. The band is formed by four fictional members: 2D with the keyboards and vocals, Murdoch playing the bass guitar and drum machine, Russel Hobss in charge of the drums and percussion, and last but not least Noodle with the guitars, keys, and vocals. After debuting in 2000, the band released their first album in 2001 which became a global hit selling 8 million copies worldwide and becoming #6 in the U.K. charts. However, their second album surpassed their first album’s success reaching #1 position in the U.K. and becoming a sell-out in both America and the U.K. The band’s singles, “Single Feel Good”, “Dirty Harry”, and “DARE”, became the bands’ greatest and most recognized records. Gorillaz’ innovative sound put them as the first virtual hip-hop group which became a worldwide sensation. With their increasing fame, the band began collaborating with various artists like Snoop Dog, De La Soul, Lou Reed, and Shaun Ryder among others. Still, after their 2005-’06 tour, the band went on a 4-year hiatus from live shows, but returned to perform live stage in 2010 at famous music U.K. festival Glastonbury and later on Coachella. In 2017, the band released for the first time in seven years a new album – HUMANZ – which, unlike their past albums, the sound is even more unique as it combines hip-hop, R’n’B, pop, reggaeton, soul and rock n’ roll. This same year the band announced a couple of tours, which is pretty special, as they are known to be a band whose performances are rare since they have just toured only three times. Moreover, Nonetheless, their tours, just like their videos, are characterized by having powerful visual effects and for featuring special guest performances.
2017 has been a ground-breaking year for Gorillaz as they did not only release a new album, performed at Outside Lands, and toured after a long-time, which could be said is a milestone for the band. Furthermore, having this global phenomenon, perform twice in San Francisco within just a time difference of a couple of months, is a once in a lifetime opportunity for those living in the Bay Area, and one that shouldn’t be missed!
