Emo-rockers Brand New have been pretty slow in releasing their long-anticipated fifth album. However this week, a 500-copy vinyl presale appeared on their website and sold out in less than 30 minutes. Today, it appears that fans who participated in the presale received CD’s numbered 1-500 in the mail from the band’s label.
According to one Reddit poster, the CD is a single, hour-long track with the title “44.5902N104.7146W,” coordinates that point to Devils Tower National Monument in Wyoming. More curious fans turned to the alwaysf-faithful Shazam, where the music-identifying app revealed that the music was indeed Brand New’s new album, which was entitled Science Fiction, and contains songs “In the Water” and “Out of Mana.” The packaging of the CD contains cryptic Xeroxed text, which ends up quoting 2001: A Space Odyssey. You can read the full text here.
“Anyways, queen takes pawn… okay?
Bishop takes knight’s pawn.
Huh, lovely move. Um… Rook to king one.
I’m sorry, Frank, I think you missed it. Queen to bishop 3, bishop takes queen, knight takes bishop. Mate.
Huh. Yeah, looks like you’re right. I resign.
Thank you for a very enjoyable game.
Yeah, thank you.
We love you again.”
Shortly thereafter, Science Fiction began appearing on digital providers, and the group’s label Procrastinate! Music Traitors posted the official tracklist. It appears that physical pre-orders will ship out in October, and several more have opened up for fans to get their hands on, and will come in standard physical copies of 12″ 2xLP vinyl, along with a digital download. Fans in Europe and Austrail (sorry rest of the world) will also be able to snag their physical copies. The album artowork was created by Morning Breath.
