This morning, indie rock duo Foxygen released a music video for their new song, “Avalon.” The song comes from their fifth album, Hang, which was released in January 2017. Presented as a behind-the-scenes look into a music video shoot, “Avalon” turns the traditional music video format into something akin to a short film.
The narrative of the video is that the duo, Jonathan Rado and Sam France are clashing over the direction of their newest video. Jonathan Rado describes it as his “dictatorial debut,” and Sam France is heard saying that he believes his power-trip is due to Rado’s film school failure. (It’s worth noting that the video was actually directed by Cameron Dutra and Alissa Torvinen.) Predictably, the quarrel ends with the two realizing that the video would be incomplete without input and cooperation from both ends. Through a heartwarming sequence of archival friendship footage, the two come together to make the final version of the video. The theme of internal strife is always relevant to musical groups, but especially one as publicly unstable as Foxygen.
