Back toward the tail-end of June, singer Moses Sumney announced his debut album, Aromanticism to some peak anticipation. In case you weren’t excited enough, the singer comes back with a new track following the lead single “Doomed,” entitled “Quarrel.”
“Otherworldly” is pretty much the only way you can describe this track. His angelic vocals (a little reminiscent of Cee-Lo Green) flow all over the jazzy, laidback instrumentals. “We cannot be lovers,” he says, “because I am the other.” Whatever he says, soul and emotion spew out through his voice to the point they become another instrument entirely. The instrumentation is also remarkable on this track. At times airy and mysterious, other times sunny and cheerful, other times foreboding and mammoth, the track morphs and shapeshifts gradually crescendoing, only to fade out.
Looking at the credits, it’s no wonder why it turned out so strong. Production comes from Cam Obi and Joshua Wiling Halpern, while Paris Strother (KING) helps on synths and piano, Jamire Williams takes on the drums, and Thundercat himself handles bass duties.
The new track fits into the concept of Aromanticism, which dives into lovelessness through sonics. The LP is slated to drop September 22 through Jagjaguwar, Sumney’s new label, and will seek to “interrogate social constructions around romance.”
