According to The Fader, Grimes is giving fans some updates on the new music she’s been working on. The singer revealed the news via Instagram announcing her spot in Harper’s Bazaar‘s Icons list. She also said she wants to delve into “unexplored sonic landscapes” as she prepares new music. Grimes also told a fan on Twitter that the new album is inspired by the game, Dark Souls 3. The next project will be her 5th studio album since her debut, Geidi Primes, in 2010.
Not sure what that would sound like or what Dark Souls 3 even is? The game, which is available on Playstation, Xbox and PC, has the user play as an unnamed warrior who rises from their grave to fight other undead or demonic creatures. The game is incredibly difficult, and the boss fights are known to be epic bouts against much larger monsters. As for the music in the game, it has an epic orchestral soundtrack that is fitting for a dark fantasy world. Whatever Grimes makes next will probably be much darker than her previous work and could even have some orchestral influences.
Grimes’ music has always had a dark influence, though her latest album Art Angels found the electronic musician taking steps towards a more accessible sound. Perhaps this is a sign that the Canadian musician is taking her sound in another direction? Considering her comments on Instagram, that she is “trying to legit make something you’ve never heard before,” it is certainly possible.
