Tyler, The Creator Releases New Song “I Ain’t Got Time”

With one of the more anticipated hip-hop releases in the past couple months, Tyler, the Creator has been undeniably having a great time teasing out more music to his adoring fans. The enigmatic rapper has officially premiered his new single “I Ain’t Got Time!” on Beats 1 radio with Zane Lowe on Wednesday.

However, the track has already gained a fair amount of notoriety since his full album Flower Boy (shame, Scum Fuck Flower Boy seems like such a better title) was leaked online earlier this month. One of the verses on the cut begins with the couplet “Next line will have ’em like ‘Whoa’/ I’ve been kissing white boys since 2004,” raising speculation that Tyler’s upcoming record would be a coming-out-of-the-closet project.

Regardless of the pointed, scandalous lyrics, there are a variety of left-hook moments in the production as well. The song takes a pulse-thumping bass with tingling synths to create a jarring, adrenaline-inducing beat. Plus, a looped sample from Deee-Lite’s “Groove Is in the Heart” is laid alongside the drum and synth effects. And how could you possibly top that.

Apparently, the beat was conceived in Kanye West’s studio during the recording sessions for The Life of Pablo. When West had gone to take a nap, Tyler stole the booth for a second, starting “smacking, start clapping, start making weird noises” after he had told the sound engineer to start recording. He had then added a booming bass over the combination to create the psychedelic single.

He had originally intended for the song to go to ‘Ye. “I was like, damn,” reported Tyler. “Kanye should take this song, he would so much cooler saying ‘I ain’t got time’ than me. He didn’t like it.” Afterwards, Tyler had also reached out to Nicki Minaj various times to contribute a verse, but Minaj apparently told Tyler she “‘couldn’t think of nothin’.”

Anyway, these various setbacks may actually be a blessing as disguise, as Tyler’s raspy, psychotic voice fits appropriately over the hardcore production.
