It’s been 23 years since the Boston alt rock band Belly made a follow up to their 1995 sophomore record, King. After reuniting last year for a tour and dropping a few new tracks as well as favorites like “Feed the Tree,” and “Slow Dog,” they have made it official. According to frontwoman Tanya Donelly who posted on the Belly’s website that a new record is on the way. The “when” is still up in the air but the band, though is already getting ready to head back into the studio in the upcoming weeks to lay new music down.
In the post done by Donnelly, she writes that; “We very much appreciate all the patience regarding the new Belly material we’ve now promised several times! We really have been busy writing and demoing new songs since the conclusion of the reunion tour last year, and we’re happy to reveal that we’ll be going into the studio in just a couple of weeks with our friend Paul Q. Kolderie working the knobs and faders. It is our hope that we’ll have a new Belly record ready for release sometime in 2018, and in the meantime we’re laying the groundwork for some touring to coincide!”
Best known for their 1993 MTV hit “Feed the Tree,” Belly reunited back in 2016 during a two August dates at the Royale in Boston. The reunited Belly lineup included the original lineup, Tanya Donelly (guitar/vocals), Thomas Gorman (guitar), Chris Gorman (drums), and the recently cancer survivor Gail Greenwood (bass). This was the first time the group came back together since their series of concerts in 1996.
The band came together in Boston back in 1991, formed by Donnelly, the former member of Throwing Muses. Belly consisted of Donelly, the Gorman brothers and Fred Abong who left the band in 1991 and was replaced by Greenwood. The band then disbanded in 1996 but have since reunited giving fans the desire to return to the 90s.
The 90s have slowly been coming back into popular existence with other acts of the decade returning to the stage including the Pixies, who regrouped after an 11-year hiatus to tour as well as offering up two new albums. Though the band lost their original bassist Kim Deal back in 2013. Sleater-Kinney found themselves regrouped in 2014 after an 8-year break and Helium started playing shows again for the first time in 19 years. This 90s nostalgia trend has seen some resistance but has proven fans still will buy tickets to their favorite bands even if it’s a couple of decades later.
