Blabbermouth.net has reported that System of a Down bassist Shavo Odadjian has shot down rumors that the band will be recording a new album soon. In a live Q&A session Odajian was asked about the status of a new System of a Down record, replying “It’s not happening. I don’t know. I don’t know when it’s gonna be. Not right now.” In recent years System of a Down have returned to touring but they have not released a new album since 2005’s Hypnotize and Mesmerize. Metal fans have been eagerly anticipating any positive news with regards to a new recording as the twelve year gap stands as the longest between studio albums for the band.
Drummer John Dolmayan has recently stated that the band has written and recorded fifteen new songs, expressing hope that the band would return to the studio to finish them sometime in the future.
However, with Odajian’s recent comments it appears that there is no timetable for the band to work on a new album. In recent interviews singer Serj Tankian has also made it clear there is no new recordings on the way, saying “As far as a SYSTEM record, there’s nothing in the plans right now.”
System of a Down are currently playing select festival and headlining dates for the remainder of the summer and this recent news suggests that they will continue this pattern for the foreseeable future, as has been the case since their return from hiatus in 2012.
