Mac DeMarco is the kind of dude who will invite his fans over for coffee. And just like that, he’s become one of the most likeable artists in music–cool, easy-going, fun. And yeah, his music is pretty damn good, too.
When DeMarco first started out his humor was everywhere in his music (listen to songs like “Salad Days” and “Chamber of Reflection”), but on his third album This Old Dog that lighthearted quirky side dropped down a little. Now his songs have become a bit more chill, more introspective and definitely more serious. If asked which album was the most personal of his career, it would definitely be this one, which was released just this year, behind his albums called Salad Days from 2014 and Another One in 2015.
DeMarco used to live in Queens before relocating to Los Angeles, where those invites for coffee turned into backyard BBQs in the sunshine. Most of his demos were written back in NY and then finished in LA, but location didn’t influence the record as much as one might think. His inspiration came from the same place within him, delivering a smooth, acoustic record that leaves fans both surprised and impressed. Maybe he’s grown up a bit (OK, a lot) on this record, but he’s still the same Mac that fans first adored–drinking beers with that iconic front-tooth gap, but now he’s just a little more surprised by how much bigger the venues have gotten since he first started out.
