Marty Friedman, former guitarist for Cacophony and Megadeth is returning to music with the announcement of a new album which is set to be released on August 4th via Prosthetic Records. The new record is titled Wall of Sound and will be produced by Friedman himself. In honor of the new record, Friedman revealed to fans a new song off the record titled “Whiteworm.”
Friedman breaks down some insight to the new record and newly released single to Guitar World.
“There are many unique playing, composing and arranging concepts on each song [on Wall of Sound], and they are quite different from each other,” Friedman says. “In ‘Whiteworm,’ it starts with an element that I like, which is to do something that ‘doesn’t sound like me.’
“I tend to sound like myself even when I’m not trying to, so it is a little thrill to come up with something that doesn’t smell like me at all. Also, I think a subliminal goal in rock music is to have an intro that many people will want to pick up a guitar and play—’Stairway to Heaven,’ ‘Smoke on the Water,’ etc. Since those days, more challenging things can inspire people too. This intro would have made me run to a guitar to try to learn it when I was 15.”
The instrumental track is hardcore and will send kids to their local music shop to try and imitate the guitar solo. Since music is meant to inspire, “Whiteworm” is a track that will inspire those who want to get into music, a way to do that.
Friedman goes on to say that; “My favorite part of the song is the solo around the 4:00 mark, where the ad lib melody kind of ties up everything we’ve listened to up to that point in an almost Disney type of way. I also love the strangely placed Latin feel in the song.”
Like his previous record, Inferno, the new album will feature some talented artists. The core band that helps bring the sound together on Wall of Sound include Anup Sastry and veteran Gregg Bissonette who both share the drumming duties. Other guests on the album include Japanese musician Kiyoshi, Jinxx of Black Veil Brides and Shiv Mehra of Deafheaven. Jorgen Munkeby of Shining also lends his voice to the album’s only non instrumental track.
