It almost doesn’t seem possible that British band Slowdive has been around since the late 80s, especially since they’ve just released a new album this year, proving that they’re still very much relevant in the indie-rock, ambient, shoegaze scene.
Just For a Day is the name of their debut album from 1991, followed by two more in the 90s called Souvlaki and Pygmalion. And yes, it’s strange that it’s been so long since the band has released something new, but that’s just the way it goes. They’ve kept alive their original sound while keeping their new songs interesting, too. Listen to “Slomo” and “Sugar for the Pill” and you’ll discover again how much this band has been missed and how you hope not that much time will ever go by again before they release something new.
When you listen to Slowdive you’re enveloped by an ethereal tone–one that makes you feel like you’re in some sort of rock dream that’s watery and cool and mystical. And yes, it’s a reunion that’s been long-awaited and very much worth it, because now they’re back and just as badass as ever (and now signed to Dead Oceans Records), of course while keeping alive the genre of “shoegaze” while also trying to stretch the band’s sound into new territory to keep the vibe new and different. And so they play on, a mix of old and new, which includes Terminal 5 in NYC on 11/12.
