Celebrated Olympia-based black metal outfit Wolves In The Throne Room have just announced the release of their upcoming 6th album Thrice Woven, which will be available on September 22 via the band’s own Artemisia Records. The record arrives 3 years after their previous effort Celestite and will consist of 5 truly epic tracks.
Though the band has never strayed too far from its traditional black metal roots, they have also never avoided experimentation. “Born From the Serpent’s Eye” kicks of Thrice Woven, with its powerful Swedish ambient vocals by Anna Von Hausswolff. The track will be supplemented by a hopefully phenomenal video directed by metal documentarians Peter Beste and Nico Poalillo, which features a bonfire-lit performance in a forest near their hometown.
The American band has always seemed to have a fascination for Norse mythology, and Thrice Woven is no exception. Third track “Angrboda” is named after a frost giantess that birthed the key Norse figure, Fenrir Wolf, a beast whose fate is to murder the great god Odin in the prophecied Ragnarök.
Fenrir Wolf is also featured on the cover of Thrice Woven, in a dark interpretation by the Russian occult artist Denis Forkas. Forkas’ “obscure medieval painting techniques perfectly complement the music” of the band.
Anna von Hausswolff returns in a duet with Turkish harpist Zeynep Oyku in the interlude “Mother Owl, Father Ocean.” “Fires Roar In The Palace Of The Moon” wraps up the album with a classic Cascadian black metal epic, the third eye opens to see holy rivers being born from the ice on the tallest peaks.
