Deerhoof Announce New Album Mountain Moves Featuring Jenn Wasner, Lætitia Sadier and More for September 2017 Release

Today, Deerhoof set the date for the release of their new album, Mountain Moves, as September 8th, via Joyful Noise Recordings. The band released the album’s first single, “I Will Spite Survive,” today via the popular news organization, Democracy Now!. The album, created by the original bandmembers, Greg Saunier, Ed Rodriguez, Satomi Matsuzaki and John Dieterich, along with the Children of Hoof Radio & Television Orchestra, will consist of twelve original songs and three covers.

The album will feature Stereolab’s Lætitia Sadier, Juana Molina, and Xenia Rubinos. The mode of release, via an independent news source, indicates exactly what the song is about: remaining calm, informed, and independent, during a time of political uncertainty in America and the world. A statement released by the band on Democracy Now!, reads, “In this world of tyrants and CEOs seemingly hellbent on achieving the termination of our species, perhaps the most rebellious thing we could do is not die.” The single’s title, “I Will Spite Survive,” makes good on the notion that even to simply survive is to spite the “tyrants and CEOs” in charge of our world, who seem to stand against life itself. The album will be inherently political, and includes a community of artists.

Deerhoof has been in the news recently because of Greg Saunier, the band’s drummer, who used Twitter to bring attention to the suspicious methods that Daytrotter, a media company, uses to share live recordings and mp3 downloads of songs and performances by various artists. Saunier claims Daytrotter misrepresented the way in which it would release Deerhoof’s music on its website, at one point claiming it would be free, though later reversing their claim with no mention to the band, who also received none of the proceedings. Deerhoof has also been involved in a compilation album in support of Planned Parenthood, but is now focused on an upcoming tour.
