mxdwn Premiere: Elliot Root Release Haunting New Video for “10,000”

Elliot Root are a Nashville-based alternative group that are quickly rising, set for the release of their debut LP Conjure on August 25. Today, the band premiere the video for their latest single, “10,000.” The single has already done well for the quartet, which features Scott Krueger on vocals and guitar, Melissa Mattey on drum programming and keyboard, Sean Truskowski on drums and Todd Bond on guitar. This first album follows in the wake of two EPs which were released in 2015 – Thoughts From Yesterday and II.

“10,000 is a song that came from various states of mind I would experience when I had some downtime on the road, usually I would be daydreaming,” said Krueger. “So we wanted the narrative of the story to have a dreamlike quality to it. It was a really great experience getting to be so involved in the story of our first music video.”

The song is relatively subdued, guided by soft drum rolls and Krueger’s soulful vocals. It doesn’t take long for the song to reach its climactic, hook-driven chorus of “10,000 feet above the ground / and I’m floating in an unusual headspace.” Meanwhile, an actor is depicted in a mysterious, foggy dreamscape with a carpet of fallen leaves, airplane seats and oxygen masks – matching the lyrical themes of the song’s chorus. Between shots of the man there are frames of a woman who looks very similar to the one on the cover of Conjure. Later, the main character can be seen standing on the banks of a lake alongside a canoe – he eventually gets in the vessel and can be seen rowing across the water; when he arrives at his destination he is greeted by a beautiful woman in a flowing white dress. Dancing amid a brilliant backdrop of colors, the woman begins to fade from sight before he pulls her back towards his body.

Bringing the video full circle, the clip concludes with the man awaking on a crowded airplane, revealing the entire experience to be a dream. However, who should sit next to him seconds later but the same beautiful woman from the previous scenes. Judging from his reaction, he does not know the woman yet – but one gets the sense that is about to change.

Krueger described the thematic elements of  Conjure as examining oneself and the human condition through a variety of lenses. It was recorded in Nashville at Blackbird Studios and Width Music, with Mattey and Krueger serving as co-producers. It will be released on E.R. Recordings/Thirty Tigers.
