Moses Sumney Releases New Video for “Doomed” And Signs With Jagjaguwar

Moses Sumney is full of news today with announcements of a new record deal, a new track and a list of dates ready to kick off a brand new tour. First off, Sumney has announced earlier today that he is signing a new record deal with indie record label, Jagjaguwar. The record label is located in Bloomington, Indiana and is home to such artists as Dinosaur Jr., Midnight Sister, Angel Olsen, and Bon Iver.

In honor of the new signing, Sumney has released his first new material since 2016 with a new track titled “Doomed.” With the release, Sumney is offering fans a glimpse into his forthcoming new album with the new label, Jagjaguwar. The new track doesn’t arrive alone but with a music video directed by Allie Avital (who he collaborated with on his video for “Worth It.”)

The song, “Doomed,” is an atmospheric ballad and it shows in the video. The music video is a quiet scene, a scene as simple as Sumney floating underwater in a water pod. Sumney is framed so tightly within that the video has a dream like sense of wonder. The audience only sees the body of Sumney as he floats alone, his hands reach out to glass as if hoping to find another soul to touch.

Sumney’s vocals are as quiet and smooth as the scene itself capturing the beauty within the water glass. As the camera wraps itself around Sumney, it then slowly pans over to reveal another human body, another lost soul trying to find touch herself. Her hands touch the glass mirroring his own revealing the space between them, space that holds nothing but darkness. When the song slowly comes to an end, the camera again slowly moves out to reveal a larger scene of what appears to be more water pods full of lost souls, in a clone like structure one would see in a futuristic film.

Sumney’s tortured and romantic falsetto is a showcase of what a powerful voice he truly has. Judging by the new track, it is apparent that the world needs a full-length album more than ever. That is exactly what fans will get because “Doomed” will be featured in Sumney’s debut album. According to the press release, the new album is described as “an intimate concept record about lovelessness as a sonic dreamscape.”

Moses Sumney came onto the scene in 2014 and since then has been riding a wave of word-of-mouth praise, hushed recordings, and electrifying live performances. Sumney worked hard to get his music out by releasing his is debut cassette EP, Mid-City Island, and 2015’s 7″, Seeds/Pleas on his own. Along with his self released EPs, he has performed all around the world alongside David Byrne, Karen O, Sufjan Stevens, Solange, and James Blake.

With the last 3 years, Sumney has distinguished himself with festival shows all across the globe as well as collaborations with some well known artists. Though with all that Sumney has offered, it is only fitting that a proper introduction be made. It is time that he released a proper full-length debut album to show the world what he is truly made of.

In addition to the new music video and label deal, Sumney has confirmed details of both a North American and European tour. The line of shows will begin in San Diego on September 22 and will run through October 25th at LA’s Fonda Theater. Following the North American tour, Sumney will travel to Europe for live shows in the U.K., France, as well as other countries.
