New Found Glory is just one of those bands that is the epitome of pop-punk from the early 2000s. If you were at all an emo kid back then (or even if you weren’t and just had a radio that played rock music), then NFG was definitely on your radar, especially with hit singles like “My Friends Over You” and “All Downhill From Here.” Their songs were the backbone of the genre, and they represented the peak of that scene, especially once they signed with top indie label Drive-Thru Records.
Of course it’s always a challenge for artists to stay true to their music, to resist “selling out” and turning into a sugary mainstream band (especially when there were so many bands out there at the time who were essentially using the same recipe when it came to music and fame). But New Found Glory managed to rise above the trends and actually make music that stuck. They wanted to make good music, keep getting better and better, and they wanted to have fun, too. And just this year they’ve released their ninth studio album on Hopeless Records called Makes Me Sick, so clearly the band has the formula for staying relevant, and for keeping the genre of true pop-punk music alive and kicking. People thought that this genre had died. But it’s bands like New Found Glory that give the middle finger to that idea.
“The Sound of Two Voices” and “Say It Don’t Spray It” off their new album are the prime songs to get the summer going and will remind you just how much their classic pop-punk sound is so not going anywhere.
