Sweet Apple, the pop rock outlet from Vermont, has been quiet since their 2014 release, The Golden Age of Glitter, which saw a slew of critical praise. Now, however, fans can finally rest easy knowing new music is on the horizon.
Today, the group shared details on their upcoming music through their new LP Sing the Night of Sorrow, out July 28 through Tee Pee Records. According to the release, the group’s “inner circle” has expanded on the new album, with a slew of new voices entering the creative fray. Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees, Queens of the Stone Age), Robert Pollard (Guided by Voices), Rachel Haden (Haden Triplets) and Doug Gillard (Guided by Voices, Nada Surf) will all provide their talents on tracks throughout the album, while Stephen McBean (Black Mountain, Pink Mountaintops) will play backup guitar for the band’s live dates throughout the year.
In the press release, John Petkovic had this to say on the new album: “The themes of ‘Sing the Night in Sorrow” explore abandonment and desolation that reflect both the left-for-dead urban landscapes of places like Cleveland and the forgotten small towns of New England—Places crawling with drugs and ghosts and people that have been left behind.”
Sonically, the album takes a lot of influence from these ideas of desolation says Petkovic. “A number of songs on the record have ‘abandoned’ or ‘ruins’ type themes. It’s also reflected in music on the album which breaks down equally between the loud noise of the city and the softer elegiac songs of the town.” Besides the uplifting themes mentioned previously, fans can expect “insurgent guitars, glitter-stomp, and orchestrated pop” throughout the album.
