Indie rock band Broken Social Scene has had over 20 different musicians since 1999. More a musical collective than a band, Broken Social Scene is gearing up for the release of their new album, Hug of Thunder in July of this year. The band’s overall sound has been described as baroque pop, using a mixture of sounds to create something new. Over the years, Broken Social Scene live performance lineup has changed with the additions of other musicians. The band has released 5 studio albums, 4 EPs, and a few singles in their career.
Broken Social Scene formed Toronto, Canada during 1999 by Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning. The band released their debut album, Feel Good Lost, in early 2001. Even though the album didn’t chart, it was a huge success among their fans. The album was released on indie record label Noisy Factory Records. For live shows around Toronto, the duo enlisted help from other indie artists around the city. Over time, Broken Social Scene continued to grow. In October 2002, the band recorded their second album titled, You Forgot It In People. The album was released by Paper Bag Records and produced by David Newfield. The following year, You Forgot It In People was nominated and won Alternative Album of The Year at the Juno Awards in 2003. Most of their songs from the album were used in various films and TV shows. A few years later, Broken Social Scene released their third self-titled album which peaked at number 6 on US Independent Albums Chart and number 105 on Billboard 200.
For their tours and live shows, Broken Social Scene’s lineup has always changed. The band toured all over Europe promoting their music. During their performances, various bands would join them on stage. The band went on hiatus after their last US tour in 2009. Since then, the band has gotten back together and back in the studio working on a new album.
