The Australia-based band Royal Headache are known for many things. They’re known for their high-energy live shows. They’re known for their DIY-focused attitudes that are sometimes abrasive. And they’re known for making albums that are short (both less than thirty minutes each).
Royal Headache first sprung into the scene back in 2012 with their self-titled release, followed by High that was released in 2015 on What’s Your Rupture? Records. But for these anxious punksters, the future of the band has always been a little rocky. Were they going to break up? Were they going to fully commit to their “real” lives? Was Shogun, their lead singer, going to keep his mood swings going, as he squirmed with uncertainty amongst the ups and downs of rock and roll life? But Royal Headache would not end. Instead they stuck together, writing songs that reveal their more vulnerable side (which strays slightly from their breakout sound), as they sing about love and relationships, which you can hear on songs like “Wouldn’t You Know” and “Love Her if I Tried.”
Playing venues that are punky and DIY is what Royal Headache loves the most, so playing a venue like House of Vans, which celebrates “off the wall” culture, is ideal for them. And they will deliver. They’ve found a new energy this time around and you’ll hear it. You’ll see it. And they’re proud of what they’re doing–that sweet and sour mix of punk-rock meeting soulful, catchy hits.
