At this point you’ve no doubt heard about the tragic death of Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman Chris Cornell, and the waves it has sent throughout the music community. Whether it’s the tragic circumstances of his suicide, the grief and admiration expressed by fellow musicians, or the celebrations of his music, Cornell has been on everyone’s mind, including festival organizers.
A side effect of Cornell’s death is the scramble to replace Soundgarden in several festival’s lineups. Cornell’s death came in the middle of a Soundgarden tour, and the band was supposed to headline the Columbus, OH-located festival Rock on the Range, but instead the festival will put together a tribute to Cornell. Live, Bush, Sum 41, and Gojira will fill the void left by Soundgarden for tonight’s opening night.
St. Louis’ Pointfest hosted by 105.7 The Point was canceled entirely after losing their headlining act, who would have been joined by Dillinger Escape Plan, Stone Sour, Pierce the Veil and others. In a statement, the festival said “It is with deep regret, we are announcing that due to the sudden passing of Chris Cornell of Soungarden last night, Pointfest on Saturday is cancelled.” The statement went on to say “105.7 The Point, Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre, and Live Nation extend our deepest sympathies to the members of Soundgarden, their crew, management, and the Cornell family.”
While canceled shows are probably the last things on fans’ minds, it is an unfortunate side effect of an already tragic event.
