Beach House have just announced a B-Sides and Rarities album that will be released June 30 through Sub Pop. In addition to the announcement, the band has also released a previously unheard song, “Chariot,” which will also be on the album. Listen to the song below:
“Chariot” was recorded during the Depression Cherry and Thank Your Lucky Stars sessions, which are the band’s most recent albums, released two months apart. The song includes the band’s signature dream-pop synth playing throughout, with singer Victoria Legrand’s effortless vocals leading the melody. The song seems to be about lost love and regret, with lyrics such as “The way you chased her, the Cadillac back on the coastline with the sun on his back.”
The B-Sides and Rarities album includes 14 tracks total, sourced all the way back to the band’s formation in 2005. According to the band’s press release, “The idea for a B-sides record came when we realized just how many non-album songs had been made over the years, and how hard it was to find and hear many of them. This compilation contains every song we have ever made that does not exist on one of our records.”
Their statement also emphasized that although they have never tried to make commercial music, some of the songs merely didn’t fit into the albums they were putting out at the time. “When we announced that we were releasing a B-sides and rarities album, someone on Twitter asked, ‘B-sides record? Why would Beach House put out a B-sides record? Their A-sides are like B-sides.’ This random person has a point.” They stated.
Twelve of the songs were previously released, but not put out on standard, full-length albums, and the second unreleased song is called “Baseball Diamond,” which was also recorded during the Depression Cherry/Thank Your Lucky Stars sessions.
In addition to the album announcement and new song, Beach House have also added new dates to their 2017 international and festival tour schedule.
