Lacuna Coil, an Italian gothic metal band, has kept their signature genre tight since forming back in the 90s. Their album, Delirious which was released last year has sparked a different visual and cinematic style.
Taking on a cinematic approach this time around, the band unveiled their new music video accompany their song, “You Love Me ‘Cause I Hate You.” The music video disguises itself as a short film and is a masterpiece within its seven minute running time.
The members of Lacuna Coil dived into meaning behind the video in a recent interview. Andrea Ferro says, “We decided to create something to bring back the artistic quality video clips used to have. We put our love for cinema into our video.” According to Christin Scabbia in interview; “The darkness, the intensity, the script itself are taking the viewer to the dimension we wanted to be transported to.”
The music video contains a dramatic storyline that continues the twisted story first seen in their previous music video, “Blood, Tears, and Dust.”
Like “Blood, Tears, and Dust,” the video is directed and edited by Cosimo Alema and produced by the production company Borotalco. Both videos combine together to tell a twisted story that is reminiscent of Nic Pizzolatto’s anthology series, True Detective bringing in visuals and details only a true fan will spot.
Within the short film, one can spy the rest of the band members as characters throughout the video, but it is co-vocalist Cristina Scabbia who takes on a significant role as one of the two investigators tracking the disappearance of a young woman. Her partner is actor Andrew Hardwood, the music video also features Andrea Ferro, Marco “Maki” Coti Zelati, Ryan Black Folden and Diego Cavallotti who all take on significant roles in the story.
The music video sets up the opening by mirroring Matthew McConaughey interrogation moments of the True Detective with Scabbia sitting across from a couple of police detectives. Her messy and disheveled appearance is a splitting image of McConaughey and as she lifts up her coffee mug, the music video rewinds as she tells her story. The credits here are cinematically beautiful with aerial shots as the camera soars and moves through mansions, forests, motel rooms and hospitals. Scabbia’s character, like the characters in True Detective dives into the mystery behind a murdered young woman.
Fans of the show, True Detective, can admire details that Cosimo Alema uses such as the shot shows her sitting in a motel room transfixed by the cross on an otherwise empty wall as well as clips of characters riding in cars. The twisted story within “You Love Me ‘Cause I Hate You” is a harrowing tale of torture and abuse. Even if viewers think they know what’s coming around each frame, think again.
