This morning, a series of allegations were pushed against PWR BTTM on Twitter and Reddit, accusing Ben Hopkins of repeated abuses, both physically and verbally. This is a particularly shocking claim considering the group’s status as a beacon for the queer and LBGTQ community at large. While an old photo of Hopkins was included in the posts (an image that has been addressed and explained by Hopkins quite some time ago), the most explosive accusations paint Hopkins as someone who has repeatedly pushed themselves on others (and often, allegedly, minors) despite a lack of consent or even “nos.”
Naturally, Hopkins and PWR BTTM’s other band member Liv Bruce issues a response to the claims, calling them a “surprise” and “shocking,” acknowledging the seriousness of what is alleged while stating we live in a culture currently trivializes and normalizes violations of consent. They go on to say that Hopkins has not been contacted by any victims of abuse but that they are seeking a mediator that will run an email address for abuse victims or someone working with a survivor to discuss the allegations. PWR BTTM make it clear that Hopkins in particular will have no access to the account to protect victims and to protect Hopkins himself in case of malicious attack.

Meanwhile, Sadie Dupuis of Speedy Ortiz and her solo SAD13 project chimed in on Twitter, sharing her own date rape story and how it relates to being a victim of someone that is massively popular in a scene:
me: *watching ppl discover some1 has repeatedly committed sexual assault* me: *waiting for the assailant to respond* me: *holding my breath*
— sadie dupuis (@sad13) May 11, 2017
does it ever make you sad that you can't trust anyone haha lol ?
— sadie dupuis (@sad13) February 17, 2017
i really liked pwr bttm as artists and people. their music gave me a lot of hope. i don't view this pwr bttm statement as accountability
— sadie dupuis (@sad13) May 11, 2017
just wish people could value victims' feelings over a press cycle or album sales
— sadie dupuis (@sad13) May 11, 2017
i am also 100% proof positive that everyone involved has known about these allegations for at least 3 months. that's when i found out
— sadie dupuis (@sad13) May 11, 2017
at least one victim made the emotionally laborious effort to reach out and try to find some resolution, some accountability

Meanwhile, T-Rextasy, a band that was scheduled to tour with PWR BTTM and themselves including queer-identifying members, came forward with this story about signing on to tour with the duo:
1)Hi folks. We will speak more later about our next steps, but want to address the accusations against PWR BTTM as soon as possible
— T-Rextasy (@trextasynyc) May 11, 2017
2)We wish we could say these allegations come as a complete surprise, but that is not the truth. Around the time we agreed to a July tour w
— T-Rextasy (@trextasynyc) May 11, 2017
3)PWR BTTM, someone came to us privately + warned us that they had these experiences w Ben. They asked us not to share them publicly.
— T-Rextasy (@trextasynyc) May 11, 2017
4)At the time we felt we should continue w the tour. We did not want to out the person who had come to us in confidence. We feared that
— T-Rextasy (@trextasynyc) May 11, 2017
5) ducking out of a tour offer with no excuse would damage our professional relationships, many connected very personally to PWR BTTM.
— T-Rextasy (@trextasynyc) May 11, 2017
6)This in no way excuses us from culpability. We were scared and confused but we were also selfish. We made a mistake supporting this band.
— T-Rextasy (@trextasynyc) May 11, 2017
7)We put our career above the safety of fans who have trusted us and supported us and there's no way for us to remedy that.

UPDATE (5/12): The bad news keeps piling up for PWR BTTM in the wake of the accusations that have been brought against Ben Hopkins. The band has cancelled their album-release show in New York City, as reported by Brooklyn Vegan. As T-Rextasy made it clear above, they have cancelled their appearances with PWR BTTM. Now, another opening artist has cancelled – Nnamdi Ogbonnaya, who expressed disappointment at “this type of shit continuously happening.”
According to Pitchfork, other opening groups Tancred, iji and Ratboy have dropped off the tour as openers for PWR BTTM as well.
Now, touring member Cameron West has announced he will leave the group as a performer and arranger. He stated how shocked he was at the allegations, then learned the band had known about them for months without sharing with the rest of the group. He adds that his decision is based on providing the highest possible respect for everyone.
Hi everyone. Today, like many PWR BTTM fans, I was shocked to discover that sexual assault allegations were levied against Ben Hopkins. /1
— Cameron West (@cameronwestmusi) May 12, 2017
From my understanding, these accusations were in fact levied via e-mail months ago, but were left unshared with other members of /2

the band, including myself. In order to provide the highest possible respect to everyone who has come forward /3
— Cameron West (@cameronwestmusi) May 12, 2017
I am hereby ending my tenure with the band as an arranger and touring musician.
— Cameron West (@cameronwestmusi) May 12, 2017
Also leaving the band as a touring member is Nicholas Cummins, who wrote on Twitter that he believe all the accusation levied against Hopkins, he will not “dispose of them as human beings.” He added that while he was aware of some transgressions on the part of Hopkins, the breadth of what is coming out has him floored. He concludes the thread by hoping the band does the right thing and is honest and transparent in their accountability:
i'll say what i told ben; while i will never dispose of them as a human, i fully believe all accusations that came up today. regardless 1/
— social justice Wario (@nicholasfukc) May 11, 2017
of their intent it's clear that multiple people had their boundaries crossed. that's incredibly unacceptable and needs to be acknowledged 2/
— social justice Wario (@nicholasfukc) May 11, 2017
they have a lot of work left to do before their victims can feel any sense of accountability; the statement today is not that. 3/
— social justice Wario (@nicholasfukc) May 11, 2017
before today, like many others, i saw rumors of abuse, and my immediate response was to tell the band. but i am absolutely floored 4/
— social justice Wario (@nicholasfukc) May 11, 2017
at the breadth and depth of the actions that ben's taken that are coming out. they have a massive amt of self-examination to do and 5/
— social justice Wario (@nicholasfukc) May 11, 2017
i suspect they aren't the only one for whom that's true. i personally wish that every person hurt by their actions can find a way to be 6/
— social justice Wario (@nicholasfukc) May 11, 2017
okay. i am deeply horrified by the thought of any role i may have played in doing harm to those people when playing with that band. all i 7/
— social justice Wario (@nicholasfukc) May 11, 2017
can do is hope that the band does the right thing and pursues accountability in an honest and transparent way.

UPDATE 2 (5/12): Hopscotch Festival has announced via Twitter that they’ve dropped PWR BTTM from their 2017 lineup.
The reaction to the allegations against Hopkins and PWR BTTM has been steep and swift; their management company, Salty Artist Management, has dropped the band. The company issued a statement on Facebook today:
In light of the allegations involving members of PWR BTTM, Salty Artist Management will no longer be working with the band. We do not take these kind of allegations lightly and our thoughts are with victims and survivors of abuse who have been affected by this.
If you need someone to talk to, these organizations can provide information and support:

National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs – (212) 714-1141UPDATE (5/13): Yesterday, as details of the abuse claims against Ben Hopkins emerged, the fallout continued for PWR BTTM. It appears Polyvinyl will drop the band, as the link for their artist page redirects back to the roster page for Polyvinyl, and PWR BTTM are nowhere to be seen. Their album has been removed from the Polyvinyl site as well and the label has left a statement (from Pitchfork), indicating that they will no longer sell or distribute the band’s album and are offering refunds for those that did purchase the album. The label will also donate to RAINN (rainn.org), which works to aid LGBTQ victims of sexual violence.
