Lost In the Music
Lost in Stars is the project of LA-based producer Dylan Willoughby. With help from Darren Burgos, KID MOXIE and Alysa Lobo, he has put together this synth-pop album that pulls from a variety of influences. There is great guitar work on some of these songs and the singers on the album are also excellent. Yet, while Lost in Stars undoubtedly has great ideas on every track, sometimes these tracks are unable to fully come together. The singing is great, but some of the lyrics aren’t up to par. The melodies are catchy, but there is the occasional high-pitched synth that really sticks out of the mix. These little problems add up to something noticeable across the album, but that’s not to say that Lost in Stars don’t succeed for the most part. If one is looking for a new synth-pop album to vibe to, this record definitely fits the bill.
Lost in Stars is at its best when the vocal talents of its members converge with a well-balanced beat. A good example of this is the song “Once Your Were Fire.” Everything on this track comes together well to convey what the artists are trying to say. It features good lyrics and great production with low eerie synths, a steady beat and just a cohesive vibe. Another one of the album’s highlights is “All We Ever Wanted Was Everything.” This track displays Lost in Stars’ fusion of talents better than any other song on the record with its great mixture of synths and guitar work.
“Sky” is definitely one of the low points in the album’s track list. With uninspired vocals and an underwhelming beat drop, this song is just disappointing when one compares it to the higher points on Lost in Stars. The lyrics could be stronger as well. “Elephant & Castle” is another track that is brought down by strange artistic choices. The song features an irritating synth line that comes in and out and merely serves to muddle the rest of the song, which is impressive. Hopefully, Lost in Stars can keep honing their technique and get even better at what they do. Overall, this album is a success because Willoughby and company have a clear direction paired with exceptional talent and chemistry. They could definitely keep making great music in the future if they stick with it. Another chance to hear them come together would be a treat.
