The status of Die Antwoord as a band can officially be changed to: it’s complicated. Last year the music site Exclaim! released an interview with Die Antwoord’s Ninja claiming the group had announced they would be breaking up this coming September.
“Die Antwoord dies on that day. It’s all over. I feel beautiful about it. I’m not scared of the end,” he told the media source. “I’m a Ninja. I’m not scared of death.”
Following the release of the article the second half of the duo, Yolandi Visser, took to Instagram and said that Die Antwoord will not end next year, adding the journalist “twisted” their words.
So while it remains to be seen if the band is breaking up for good; what can be claimed without a doubt is the release of a new album. Dubbed The Book of Zef the album serves as a follow-up to last year’s Mount Ninji and Da Nice Time Kid. An emoji-filled lyric video for the record’s lead track, “Love Drug” has also been released filled with the familiar clashing vocals and passionate drumming for which the band has come to be known for. Adding feul to the previous break up claims, writers Noah Yoo and Jazz Monroe claim that this will be the group’s “final” album. Perhaps this means it is the final album they will be writing on or maybe the band will reimurge under a new name?
