Yesterday on Bandcamp, Phil Elverum of Mount Eerie posted a new collection of music, titled Nobody’s Perfect. In an explanation below the music, Elverum explains that these five songs were recorded at a performance in 2005 and had never been released or recorded previously. These songs come fresh on the heels of his outstanding new LP A Crow Looked At Me, which was released in March and is already one of the year’s best albums.
The songs were recorded at the Department of Safety in Elverum’s hometown of Anacortes, WA. As the songs were recorded over a decade ago, he has a hard time remembering the musicians who joined him on the album. As he could recall, they included Dave Matthies, Alex Mahan, Ryland Bouchard, Megan MacDonald, and Jay Arner.
He also writes that some of the reference points of the music on the album include a character from the Jim Jarmusch film “Dead Man,” the intense jamming of Neil Young and Crazy Horse, a philosophy of the great preservationist John Muir, and much more. He also explains that the album cover is from a show in Oregon at which he performed with four drums, multiple times diving Kurt Cobain-style into the kits.
As has been well-documented over the past year or so, Elverum recently lost his wife Genevieve after her fight with aggressive. She passed away in July of 2016. A Crow Looked At Me was recorded in the room she died and goes into explicit detail the travails of the musicians and his artist wife surrounding her tragic and untimely death.
You can buy the digital album here for $5, but you can also download it for free here at the site that hosted the original digital recordings. But really, you should buy it – maybe with enough interest this album could be released in a physical format as was originally intended.
