Amon Amarth @ Theatre of Living Arts 5/8

Swedish death metal band Amon Amarth is currently one of the best bands in the business right now. Amon Amarth as been known for their live and outlandish performances. Amon Amarth lyrics are based mostly on Viking history which makes them a Viking metal band. Over the years, Amon Amarth has released over ten albums, one EP, and a few music videos. Amon Amarth finally got their breakthrough in 2008 when their album, Twilight of the Thunder God reached the number ten spot on Swedish album chart. Amon Amarth will bring their Viking music to the Theatre of Living Arts in Philadelphia next week. The band is currently signed with Metal Blades record.

After his former band Scum broke up in 1991, Johan Hegg rejoined with a mixture of old and new band members to form Amon Amarth in 1992. Amon Amarth released their first official demo “The Arrival of the Fimbul Winter” in 1994. The demo was well received throughout the metal music world. In 1996, the band signed with Pulverised Records where they released their “Sorrow Throughout the Nine Worlds” MCD. It wasn’t until 1998 that Amon Amarth signed with Metal Blade. The band released their debut album Once Sent from the Golden Hall the same year. Amon Amarth released their breakout album, Twilight of the Thunder God, in 2008. The album reached the various top spots on numerous charts all over the world. After the release of the album, the band headlined their first North American tour in October.

Amon Amarth has made appearances in a handful of festivals worldwide. In recent years, Amon Amarth has played Sweden Rock Festival in 2013. Over the years, critics have tried their best to describe Amon Amarth with no such luck. The band has taken to using a lot of religion and mythology for their songs and album titles. Whatever genre of music Amon Amarth makes, it works well for them. Amon Amarth is not a show to miss out on!

Donovan Wilkins: Donovan Wilkins is a self-taught photographer and published writer. He lives in Glenside after moving from his hometown of Philadelphia. After studying Liberal Arts at CCP, he decided to focus his time on his writing and photography. In 2016, Donovan completed his first feature-length screenplay, The Coast is Clear.
