Folk singer Kimya Dawson is heading into the city this spring. She will be performing at the Rickshaw Stop on June 4th. Dawson will be performing alongside Wizard Apprentice, another singer songwriter.
As a Grammy award winning singer, Dawson has done a lot since her solo debut 2004. Before going solo she was one half of the popular band The Moldy Peaches. Her most recent work was back in 2011 with the album Thunder Thighs. That album, her seventh solo album, is known for the songs Same Shit / Complicated, Miami Advice, and Driving Driving Driving. Her lo-fi approach to music is especially evident in this work. Previous to that she has released 6 other solo studio albums and various collaborations with other artists such as Antsy Pants and The Bundles. Dawson hit mainstream success when the award winning movie Juno came out and she helped score the film. Her songs and her helping of pick the music is what helped set the tone for the Academy Award winning movie. Dawson contributed six solo songs to the movie’s album and one as The Moldy Peaches. Her biggest songs are Tire Swing, my personal favorite Loose Lips, So Nice So Smart, and Anyone Else But You. Her lo-fi style and honest lyrics are endearing and powerful, which is why her music helped this movie become such a hit.
Fans of The Mountain Goats, Paul Baribeau, and Neutral Milk Hotel will be down for this artist and this show. Kimya Dawson’s genius is evident in her music and she offers dissent from the boring mainstream music. Hit her up and catch some good tunes!
