The “Godfather of Goth”, Bauhaus’s Peter Murphy, has been forced to postpone his residency at the Chapel in San Francisco due to doctor’s orders. Murphy has revealed that doctors have discovered nodules on his vocal chords that, if not treated and rested properly, could cause more permanent damage to his voice.
Vocal cord nodules are swollen spots on the vocal cords that have developed into harder, callous-like growths. Vocal cord nodules are not uncommon in people who use their voice professionally and put their vocal chords under strain regularly. Murphy will be receiving treatment for the nodules but it will also require a lengthy recovery. He had this message for fans, “As you can see, I am not allowed to sing or speak for a while, doctor’s orders. I must rest my vocal cords. See you when this is over. Love, Peter.”
The nodules are certainly treatable with rest. Murphy’s agent Joady Harper said, “Peter wants all his fans to know how sorry we all are, but wants to ensure everyone that doctors have assured us that if we follow their direction there will be no lasting damage to his voice. We want to thank all of our loyal fans for all your continued support and sticking with us through this. These shows are going to be a legendary occasion and we can’t wait to share them with you.”
His residency at the Chapel in San Francisco was originally scheduled for June of 2017. Due to his rest, Murphy is forced to postpone the show until January and February of 2018. The residency was announced as a tribute and look back at his greatest solo albums in their entirety, as well as two shows dedicated to his Bauhaus classics.
The residency is going to be a huge 15 nights for Murphy fans. With his recent medical set-back, the residency is sure to have an added layer of emotion and importance. Check out the new residency dates below.
