Spanish moss from live oaks swung in the riverfront breeze as the High Water Festival kicked off on Day 1 in Charleston, SC. The early afternoon was haunted by the emotional wails of Julien Baker, rocked by four-piece Caroline Rose, and serenaded by the smooth tunes of Margo Price. As the sun sank into the horizon, casting shadows across magnolia blossoms and half-full pints from Palmetto Brewery, Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats grooved along with his high-energy horn section. In true Southern fashion, locusts dove on stage toward the dust-speckled lights during JD McPherson’s acoustic performance, before The Shins ended the night with a party to last well beyond the weekend.
