Mozart’s Sister is the alt-pop solo project of Caila Thompson-Hannant. Her latest album Field of Love was just recently released on Arbutus Records. The album is super colorful and sugary, very hipster rooftop party, and sort of feels like the alter-ego of a pop princess trying to get strange. On many of the tracks she examines themes of love and desire (hence the name of the album), especially on tracks like “Moment 2 Moment” when she sings “But if you freak out, we don’t have to stay together. Just say that you like me. Don’t it feel good to tell the truth, yeah? I can be your baby.”
Before her latest release there was Being from 2014 and two EPs before that. Her sound is absolutely Mozart’s Sister throughout her discography, but her music had definitely gotten brighter on her later tracks (which sometimes doesn’t seem possible). Songs like “Contentedness” and “Enjoy” are a touch more “subdued” for this super-pop dance-party girl from Canada (who used to study classical voice back in the day). But her vibe overall is thick with energy, very DIY (which is surprising in this style of music), and will definitely leave listeners with a radiant sugar high.
Mozart’s Sister has played SXSW and Pop Montreal, and now she’s coming to Brooklyn to bring her sparkly creative sound and to get you dancing and feeling fab with her breathy, bubbly, synth-soaked tracks.
