The Suitcase Junket @ Mercury Lounge 6/1

The Suitcase Junket is literally a one-man band, which, upon first listen, is something quite astonishing. His name is Matt Lorenz. But his music is not simple, as you might expect from a one-man show. It’s loaded and layered and exciting and sounds as though he’s singing and performing with a lot of people–a sound that’s folky-rock, grungy Americana, and the soundtrack to some twisted dusty circus (here and there). To accomplish this as one man is not an easy thing. But it sure as hell is something to be proud of.

The Suitcase Junket’s first album was released back in 2009 called Sever and Lift, followed by Knock it Down just a year later. To best understand his super interesting, rackety sound (that sometimes feels like an out-of-tune string instrument trying to get straight again), listen to tracks “In My Name” and “Bone” off these albums. But what you’ll find on the third album release called Make Time is something a little harder. Think back-country rock here in a Jack White way–something that’s grittier and dirtier, especially on tracks like “Earth Apple” and “Oh My.” But the vibe turns summery and almost romantic on tracks like “Everybody Else” and “Dauphine and Desire.” His sound works both ways–damn does it ever.

TSJ released Dying Star in 2016–just seven tracks long–and this month his latest full-length will be released called Pile Driver, which will include his latest single called “Mountain of Mind.” The Suitcase Junket is currently signed to Signature Recordings.
