In the year of 1999 in Atlanta, Georgia, three guys had left the bands they were in to form the garage punk-rock band, The Black Lips. Throughout the years, the band has had several members. Currently, the band consists of three mates, two of which are the pioneers that started it all. Cole Alexander (vocals and guitar), Jared Swilley (vocals and bass) and Jack Hines (guitar).
The band has released seven studio albums, a few live and split albums as well as a good number of singles. Their eighth studio album, Satan’s Graffiti or God’s Art?, will be out on May 5th, 2017, of Vice Records. It’s cool to say that this new album was produced by Sean Lennon and had some help from Yoko Ono. Two singles from the album have been released on Spotify, “Can’t Hold On” and “Squatting in Heaven,” be sure to check them out.
Having a similar sound to Ty Segall and The King Khan & BBQ Show, The Black Lips have a good flow of messy-punky guitar and smooth yet uneven vocals at times that keep the fuzz alive. The Black Lips are known for doing crazy things at their shows such as urinating, showing nudity, vomiting, having a chicken and a few other surprising tactics. I mean, isn’t that what a punk show should be like anyways?
