Tinariwen is an award-winning world and folk music group. The band was formed in 1979 during a troubled time in Mali. Tinariwen is known for never performing with the same group of singers. The group is constantly changing with each new show different than the last. Tinariwen recently released their new album, Elwan.
Tinariwen was founded by Ibrahim Ag Alhabib in 1979 after learning to play guitar. Ag Alhabib joined with fellow musicians in his community based on the idea to bring music to the world. Ag Alhabib has stated western pop music culture has played a role in their music. The band was called Tinariwen which translates to “The Desert Boys” in Tamashek. During his time in the military, Ag Alhabib met other musicians. Tinariwen sang songs about their daily life in their country and issues they faced. The group started to gain international recognition in 1998. The group attended their first music festival in Bamako and later the Festival au Désert in 2001 as headliners. Tinariwen also performed at WOMAD and Roskilde the same year. Their debut album, The Radio Tisdas Sessions was their first album to be released worldwide.
After a few years, Tinariwen finally achieved something most people only dream of. Tinariwen won a Grammy for Best World Music Album in 2012. Tinariwen has released a few albums since their beginning. One of their founding members, Inteyeden Ag Ablil passed in 2001 from a disease in the desert. The band still believes he is with them in spirit.
