RIP: Guitarist John Warren Geils Jr. of J. Geils Band Has Died at Age 71

There has been some very unfortunate news in the music world as John Warren Geils Jr. AKA J. Geils of the J.Geils Band was discovered dead in his home in Gronton Massachusetts at the age of 71, according to WCVB.

You will likely know the band best from their album Freeze Frame and their hit single “Centerfold.” While studying mechanical engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Geils formed the band. The band was formed with Danny Klein, Magic Dick Salwitz, Stephen Jo Bladd, and Peter Wolf, and Seth Justman being the last added member. They had their first hit album in 1970. This band was huge for the rock world and will go down as one of the great bands in music history for the 70’s and early 80’s.

The band had 11 fairly successful albums but their 12th album Freeze Frame made it to no. 1 on the Bilboard charts for a month in 1981 and stayed on the chart for 70 weeks. Opening acts for this band included the Eagles, ZZ Top and U2. This band was once again nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame but unfortunately will have to wait another year to hopefully get inducted.

Geils had called Gronton Mass. his home for the past 35 years. Our thoughts go to his family and friends as well as his beloved fans. Check out the band in it’s glory performing one of their greatest hits below.
