Cupcakke – the female rapper from Chicago’s south side – is set to perform at Subterranean April 29th. Her second studio album Queen Elizabeth was released last week and has received more than positive reviews for its creative and topical lyricism.
Born Elizabeth Harris, Cupcakke began her musical career by creating and releasing her music online in 2012. With explicit titles like “Deep Throat” and “Vagina” she quickly gained a loyal following of fans (which she has endearingly termed Slurpers). The titles, let alone the lyrics, in her songs are super sexual and make you blush and giggle at the explicitness and humor that she seamlessly combines.
Since she broke onto the scene, she’s been incredibly busy creating and releasing music. Her mixtapes, “Cum Cake”(2015), “S.T.D. (Shelters to Deltas) received attention from Pitchfork and Rolling Stone who listed it among their “Best Rap Albums of 2016 So Far”. She then quickly released her first studio album titled Audacious in 2016. She appears on Charlie XCX’s song “Lipgloss” and as mentioned above, released her second studio album last week. And it’s not time to stop – as she has a pretty heavy performing schedule too.
I wasn’t familiar with The Queen Elizabitch before writing this article and I’m ashamed! She is Chicago and she has my support! Make sure to catch her at Subterranean April 29th.
Fun Fact: Cupcakke received attention for something other than her music last month when, via Twitter, she opted to pay for a hotel room after a fan had been kicked out of his home. The act of kindness received viral attention with articles in the Chicago Tribune and Buzzfeed.
